The Different Skin Types and How to Care for Them

Everybody has different skin with different needs. What are the five different skin types and how can you care for yours? Keep in mind that your body changes as people grow and develop. What was once a normal skin type may turn into the oily, sensitive, or other variations in the future.

1 – Normal

This variety isn’t considered excessively oily or dry on a regular basis. The normal type may sometimes become oily or dry, but it’s usually fairly easy to get it back to normal. Generally, this type has even tones.

However, you shouldn’t mistake normal skin for “perfect”. Type Normal can still have blemishes and become shiny, oily, or dry due to hormones or other circumstances.

How to care for normal skin:

Using products that cause the epidermis to feel greasy or products that excessively dry it out are not the best for normal types. Consistently caring for your skin with moisturizers, cleansers, and a generally healthy lifestyle can help keep you from developing issues down the line.

2 – Oily

This type causes more breakouts as pores are clogged and stretched and your face may appear to be greasy throughout the day. The glands beneath your pores create an excess amount of oils, often causing bad breakouts.

How to care for oily skin:

People often believe that they should use products that are known to dry out their skin to get rid of the oil, but this could actually make things worse and cause more oils to be produced. Using the right, oil-free moisturizers could actually help keep your epidermis hydrated.

3  – Dry

Dry skin feels tight and may involve flaking and scaly patches. Opposite of oily skin, this variety takes place when glands don’t produce enough oils.

How to care for dry skin:

The regular use of moisturizers is incredibly important, but it’s also important to use gentle cleansers, avoid long exposure to hot water (like when showering), and use humidifiers. Just remember to change the water out before it can grow harmful bacteria or mold!

4 – Combination

Combination skin is a mixture of two or more other varieties. For example, you may have both dry and oily areas or both normal and dry areas.

How to care for combination skin:

Use two different moisturizers. For example, use an oil-free moisturizer on oily areas and a heavier one on dry areas. Exfoliation is also a must with the combination type. Keeping dry flakes and excess oils out of your pores can help keep your skin healthy.

5 – Sensitive

This type could include any of the above varieties, but also be prone to redness, inflammation, and general irritation.

How to care for sensitive skin:

Avoid treatments that cause irritation or have harsh chemicals. Using lots of moisturizer and treatments with natural ingredients often provide the most benefits.
